Hi! My name’s Larry Thompson. I live in Windsor Ontario, Canada and have enjoyed many years in music, serving in various capacities from player to producer.
It’s been my good fortune to have worked with some great talent over the years and has allowed me to develop an interesting and perhaps somewhat unique set of skills that I’d like to offer to other creatives.
At the encouragement from some good friends, I figured it’s time to get outside my usual circle and reach out to see if there are others I can help.
If you’re an artist looking to level up your current production, add a missing element, need an alternate mix or develop a project from start to finish, please visit the Samples & Testimonials page and see if perhaps what I do will be helpful.
Bio
About dlaurance music…
Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, recording/mix engineer and producer, Larry (Donald Laurance) Thompson, was born in the central-Ontario community of Georgetown. At the young age of 4, and wanting to play like his Dad, the gift of an accordion led to the beginning his love of music and the various instruments that created it. Larry migrated to piano and eventually to the Hammond B-3, playing in top bands in the region. With the good fortune of always having access to various instruments, he discovered with a little time, he could play just about any instrument he picked up.
Larry made his way into the recording studios in Toronto, writing and producing jingles for companies such as Honda and Molson’s before accepting a house band gig at a top night club in Windsor, Ontario in the early 1980’s. An early adopter of synths, Mac computers and midi, Larry employed merging music technology to augment live music long before backing tracks were the norm.
While in Windsor he met and played with some outstanding musicians and songwriters, one already in the throes of writing and pitching songs to producers, record companies and artists in the U.S. The newly formed duo decided to hunker down to write and produce a ton of pop demos in a small studio they set up. They enjoyed some successes along the way with covers by Tower of Power singer, Lenny Williams and the first Star Search Grand Champion, Catte Adams, among others. They also had a swack of major ‘holds’ that never made it to final vinyl as well as racking up some top international competition wins such as in Billboard Magazine‘s second songwriting contest.
During the next three decades, Larry has recorded/mixed/produced many artists including working on the first three Neverending White Lights (Daniel Victor) albums, most notably engineering and mixing the hit single (SOCAN Song of the Year 2006 & 2012), The Grace, featuring City and Colour’s Dallas Green. Larry was awarded a Gold Record for his work.
One of Larry’s memorable experiences was being called to do some arranging and programming for a production project that the legendary Canadian producer, Jack Richardson (The Guess Who, Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger…) was producing. “It was a thrill to work with someone with such an immense history and cred. He was very kind and complimentary of the tracks I had prep’d for the album.”
Larry is available for hire as a multi-instrumentalist playing piano, synths, Hammond B-3, bass, acoustic and various electric guitars and even a little pedal steel. He can prepare horn arrangements, playing in live trumpet, alto and tenor sax and trombone and latest passion is creating orchestral arrangements for various music projects.
dlaurance music wishes to offer creatives that identify something unique in the years of experience and collective skills Larry has been blessed with and recognize that there’s something they need – from adding a missing track to polishing a mix to co-writing to full production.
